John "Barry" Lawrence

September 18, 1932 - March 26, 2022

John “Barry” Lawrence, 89 passed away on March 26, 2022, after a brief illness. Barry was born in Bergen County, New Jerseyon September 18, 1932. He was the son of the late Victor and Hester Cutting Lawrence. He was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Lawrence, and his dear wife of 42 years Sandra Lobotzke Lawrence who died in November 2019. Barry was a 1954 graduate of Grinnell College where he received a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He was an avid swimmer and excelled on the swim team both in high school and college where he was a part of the swim team winning a conference championship. After graduation, Barry went on to have a successful career as an Account Executive in Advertising. After he and Sandra married, they enjoyed traveling and living in several adventurous places where they always made new friends. They lived in Little Rock, New Orleans, and Seattle before settling in Hendersonville upon retirement in 2000. Barry loved sailing and was a member of the North Shore Yacht Club for many years. Barry and Sandra were both active members of St. James Episcopal Church and enjoyed being on several committees to serve the needs of the Church. Barry loved relaxing on his patio watching the birds swoop in to feed out of the bird feeders or watching golfers playing golf. Barry is survived by a sister-in-law, Ann Lobotzke, brother-in-law, Randy Lobotzke (Susan), and nieces, Alexis Lobotzke Randa (John) and Helen Brewer all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on June 9, 2022, at 10:00 am at St. James Episcopal Church, Hendersonville, NC with The Reverend Christiana Olsen officiating the service. A committal service will follow in the Rose Garden where Barry spent many hours working to maintain the flowers and grounds for everyone to enjoy. A special thank you goes to all the caregivers, neighbors, and friends that helped to care for Barry for the past two years to ensure he was able to stay in the home where he loved to be. Barry was a kind, fun-loving man who had a zest for life and an infectious smile. He will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the donor’s choice or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
