Dan was born on July 13, 1933, in Swannanoa, Buncombe County, North Carolina, to Joseph W. Redmon and Jessie L. Owen Redmon. He grew up in the Swannanoa Valley, graduated from Swannanoa High School with the Class of 1952, and developed the values that would guide him throughout his life: humility, hard work, personal responsibility, and faith. In 1956, Dan answered his country's call to serve in the United States Army. Stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he served honorably as a Specialist Fifth Class (E-5) before returning home to North Carolina. The Army strengthened qualities that already lived within him—discipline, loyalty, humility, and quiet courage—traits that would become the foundation of his character throughout his life. While serving in Virginia, Dan's heart remained in Western North Carolina with a young woman named Barbara Bell, lovingly known as Bobbi. He had already asked her to marry him and proudly placed an engagement ring on her finger while she was still a senior at Biltmore High School. Their future together was never in question. What neither of them expected was how that future would begin. On December 29, 1956, Bobbi's mother, affectionately known as Nana Bell, gathered evergreen branches from the woods surrounding her home and transformed her living room into a simple wedding chapel. Family quietly prepared while Dan remained unaware. When he arrived expecting an ordinary visit, he discovered that he was about to become a husband. For decades, that beautiful story remained tucked away in family memories before being rediscovered during Dan's final season of life. Like so many moments in his life, it reminded everyone that some of life's greatest treasures are often the stories waiting to be shared. Together, Dan and Bobbi built a home where faith was lived more often than spoken, hard work was expected, laughter was welcomed, and love was demonstrated through everyday acts of sacrifice. Together they raised five children—Cindy, Debbie, JD, Rick, and Marti—teaching them by example that character is built one ordinary day at a time. Looking back, their family came to understand one of life's enduring lessons: love is not measured by perfection, but by faithfulness. Day after day, year after year, Dan and Bobbi quietly built a foundation that would support generations to come. Providing for his family became one of Dan's greatest callings. While working full-time and raising five children, he continued his education, often studying late into the evening at a small desk in the family's outside laundry room. Those quiet nights eventually led to a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Western Carolina University. More importantly, they revealed the heart of a father who believed tomorrow could always be made better through today's faithfulness. That same quiet perseverance defined his professional life. Dan devoted more than three decades to the United States Department of Agriculture, where he earned the respect of colleagues through integrity, dependability, and faithful service. Recognition came not because he sought it, but because a life consistently lived with character naturally earns the respect of others. Life continued to surprise Dan with unexpected blessings. Later, he married Mary Kathy Griffin Redmon, beginning another chapter marked by companionship, laughter, faith, and love. Through Kathy, Dan's family grew to include Nancy Smith, Sharon Rogers and her husband Alan, Mike Smith and his wife Tava, and David Smith and his wife Crystal. What began through marriage became, over time, simply family. Following Kathy's passing, Nancy faithfully remained by Dan's side, offering loving care, steadfast companionship, and thoughtful guidance during the years when he increasingly needed someone to lean on. Sharon, Mike, David, Crystal, Alan, Tava, and the entire Smith family remained an important part of Dan's life. Dan never divided the people he loved into separate families. His heart simply made room for more people. Away from work, Dan found joy in life's simple blessings. Music filled his home, and he carefully preserved the records, cassette tapes, CDs, and stereo system that accompanied him through the decades. He enjoyed following the Atlanta Braves, watching golf, reconnecting with lifelong friends, and quietly supporting churches, veterans, children, animals, and charitable organizations. His generosity was sincere, often unseen, and never offered for recognition. Those who knew Dan best understood that his greatest accomplishments were never displayed on a wall. They were found in the people he loved. In the final season of Dan's earthly life, his family received an unexpected gift. When declining health brought him to The Greens at Weaverville, everyone naturally focused on caring for his physical wounds. Instead, those months became a season of healing. Children gathered. Old photographs were opened. Military records were read again. Wedding Bibles revealed stories that had never been told. Handwritten cards became treasured reminders of love. Conversations that had waited decades finally found their moment. Relationships deepened. Old hurts softened. Grace quietly found room to work. The family discovered that healing does not always erase the past. Sometimes healing allows us to see the past through the eyes of grace. What began as a season devoted to caring for one man became a season that strengthened an entire family. Love was expressed. Forgiveness was offered. Gratitude replaced regret. Stories once hidden became gifts for future generations. On July 13, 2026, Dan celebrated his ninety-third birthday surrounded by family. Two weeks later, on Sunday, July 26, family and friends gathered once again. Bobbi, Debbie, and Marti spent the afternoon and evening sharing stories, laughter, compassion, and gratitude. Love filled the room. Later that evening, shortly after 11:00 p.m., Dan peacefully entered the presence of his Lord. His earthly journey was complete. His gift of life was not. During those precious days together at The Greens, Bobbi looked at a photograph from their wedding nearly seventy years earlier. With tears in her eyes, she smiled gently and said, "He was such a beautiful man... and now he has a beautiful heart." Those words became more than a memory. They became the family's testimony. Not because Dan's life had been perfect. But because it had been faithful. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph W. Redmon and Jessie L. Owen Redmon; his beloved wife, Mary Kathy Griffin Redmon; and his siblings Elsie Redmon, Evelyn Redmon, Edith Redmon Cecil, Marie Redmon, Forest Redmon, and Willie Redmon. He is lovingly remembered by his children Cindy, Debbie, JD, Rick, and Marti; by Kathy's children Nancy Smith, Sharon Rogers and her husband Alan, Mike Smith and his wife Tava, and David Smith and his wife Crystal; by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, lifelong friends, neighbors, and all whose lives were enriched by his quiet example. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dan's life on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Highlands Cremation & Funeral Care, 2393 Hendersonville Road, Arden, North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by a traditional funeral service at 11:00 a.m. In accordance with Dan's wishes, military honors will be rendered, and the service will reflect his Baptist faith. Dan's story does not end with his passing. It lives on in every lesson he taught without speaking. In every act of kindness inspired by his example. In every family story shared around a dinner table. In every relationship strengthened by forgiveness. In every generation that chooses faithfulness over perfection.
